PANELGUARD® Surge Protective Devices Take the Lead on NEC Code Standards

In a safety emergency, every detail matters. This includes the performance of commercial and industrial equipment, backup illumination, power ventilation, fire detection, communication systems and more.

One common way these critical systems can fail is through unexpected and harmful power surge events. That’s why NEC has instituted a variety of code standards to ensure commercial and industrial facilities integrate robust, industrial-grade surge protection.

In addition to adhering to NEC code standards, leading industrial solutions like our PANELGUARD® Surge Protective Devices help businesses save money by avoiding unnecessary equipment replacement costs and work stoppages due to equipment performance issues.

PANELGUARD makes it easy for specifiers to implement a rugged surge protection solution that's tailored to meet project and application needs. The SPDs are available in multiple configuration options and can deliver either 4 or 7 modes of protection.

What’s more, PANELGUARD helps prevent line noise harmonic distortion, which is often associated with lighting panels, while protecting downstream LED lighting panels. Built-in EMI/RFI filtering makes it the perfect choice for these types of surge protection applications.

In addition to being NEC and NFPA 780, UL 96A compliant, each PANELGUARD solution offers Type 1 and Type 2 surge protection, a NEMA 4X enclosure for indoor or outdoor installation, an individually integrated disconnect and state-of-the-art TPMOV® (Thermally Protected Metal Oxide Varistor) technology, which eliminates the potentially hazardous failure modes associated with standard MOV surge protection technology.

Installers can place PANELGUARD units at the service entrance or the load side as a way to protect downstream equipment. The SPD can also be installed in individual disconnects, sub-panels and distribution panels for added protection.

To optimize surge protection throughout a building’s entire electrical system, SPDs should be installed at every level – service entrance, distribution and branch panels. In the electrical industry, this is known as layering or multi-tier protection. IEEE refers to it as “protection in depth.” IEEE Standard 1100 recommends layering levels of protection from the service entrance to distribution, and then to branch panels and protection for individual critical loads.
